Thoughts that this officer's watch had been found in the Ypres Salient (2005) turned out to be untrue. A Canadian film company was making a documentary for a digital TV channel after a watch with the word 'England' on the strap was found in the Ypres Salient.

Jack England had been killed in action on 31 July 1917 - the first day of the Passchendaele Offensive (also referred to as Third Ypres). Captain Strange had observed Jack being killed by an exploding shell. Jack was 20 years old at the time of his death. He had attended the Cardiff High School and King's College, Taunton prior to volunteering.

The company researched the background of Jack England, visiting a suburb of Cardiff where he had lived and also contacting myself. After speaking to a descendant the producers showed the strap to an expert on old watches. What was revealed by the expert was a major disappointment!

It transpired that most watches of that period were stamped 'Made in England' thus undermining the theory that the discovered watch had belonged to Jack England. This was a sad end to what had been a tantalising prospect.
